Regular changing of menstrual products is very important, and can prevent infections and future problems. If you use a pad, make sure to change it every 3-4 hours with the exception of sleep, no matter your flow level to prevent a buildup of bacteria or odors. Tampons should be changed every 4-6 hours with the exception of sleep, at least or whenever they become saturated with blood. Be sure to change them regularly to avoid Toxic Shock Syndrome and other diseases.

Never flush menstrual products down the toilet even if the packaging says flushable. They can cause problems in plumbing systems, and create messes in bathrooms. Instead, dispose of products in trash cans or in the area provided if there is one. Menstrual cups also known as diva cups, are another type of period product. Empty these (or dispose of them if they’re not reusable) every few hours. When choosing a period product, consider your needs. If you like to swim or participate in other sports, tampons may be the best choice for you. Pads are preferred by some because they might be easier to use, and menstrual cups by others because most are reusable.
